GPI Calls for Entries for University Student Recycle Glass YouTube Competition; Chance to Win $2,000
Competition Kicks-off GPI’s Recycle Glass Week on September 21st

Alexandria, Virginia, August 20, 2009 - The Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) is sponsoring its second annual YouTube video competition as part of Recycle Glass Week, September 21 - 27, 2009. Students are asked to create a 30-second YouTube video about the benefits of glass container recycling for a chance to win $2,000, $1,000, or $500 (for first, second, or third place, respectively).

“By creating awareness and encouraging more people to recycle all forms of packaging, including glass containers, we can save energy and our planet,” says Joseph Cattaneo, president of the Glass Packaging Institute. “When you recycle glass bottles and jars, you help to reduce the amount of recyclable materials entering landfills and create a ‘greener’ future.”

All full-time students (applies to students who are currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in U.S. universities and have completed 12 credit hours or more of courses) are eligible to submit videos for the competition. Videos will be judged on originality and creativity, communicating the ‘glass message,’ and production technique and value. Videos must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, September 11, 2009. Winners will be announced on the GPI website during Recycle Glass Week, September 21 - 27, 2009.

During Recycle Glass Week, GPI and its member companies will also hold more than 40 nationwide glass recycling-related activities; provide consumers with information and opportunities to hold their own recycling events; virtually announce the winners of its 2009 Clear Choice Awards; and recognize “Friends of Glass,” those companies, organizations, and/or persons that recycle glass or promote the recycling of glass as one way to better the environment.

“Glass is 100% recyclable in a closed-loop system and the use of recycled glass is a critical part of the manufacture of cradle-to-cradle glass containers,” said Cattaneo. “By spreading the word about the benefits of glass container recycling, we hope to increase the amount of quality cullet for the manufacture of new bottles and jars and continue to improve our environmental footprint.”

A group of four Michigan State University (MSU) students won the first Recycle Glass YouTube Competition in 2008. Students Jonathon Beach (Edmore, MI), Stephen Gizicki (Canton, MI), Joshua Lobert (Blanchard, MI), and Adam Simon (Edmore, MI) created the winning video, which features stop-motion technology and the tagline “Glass can’t recycle itself.” According to Lobert, “We wanted to emphasize the fact that glass can’t recycle itself. It takes other people to actually do their part to make the world better. Glass is a reusable material, so it’s important to recycle it.”
