Ed: This is Ed Grocholski with Inside Glass Packaging. Over the past year, cosmetics maker, Sphatika International has switched packaging many of its products from plastic into glass. We recently spoke with Janet League-Katzin, Founder and Director of Sphatika International and asked her about this change. Janet, tell us a little bit about Sphatika
Janet: Sphatika is a spa as well as a skin care line. Actually, the skin care line came out of the spa because I was looking for something that would be pure enough and natural enough and effective enough to go with the very unique sleep inducing treatments that I had created for our spa. The Sphatika skincare line is 100 percent natural and it is made with the elixir Quartz Crystal, which means that it has a very high vibration or subtle energy in the product line. It’s an extremely unique and beautiful line.
Ed: Why the change from plastic to glass?
Janet: Well, as I said, the Sphatika skincare line is 100 percent natural and I wanted the packaging and the containers to be eco-friendly and compatible with the product.
Ed: What are some of the advantages of glass?
Janet: Well, first of all they are recyclable, they are eco-friendly and they actually help to maintain the integrity and the stability of the ingredients. There’s no leaching of chemicals into the products, which is a really important thing with an all-natural line.
Ed: Which of your products work best in glass packaging?
Janet: Well, all of the Sphatika creams, lotions, toners, the mists, even the deodorants, so all of our products are appropriate.
Ed: How have your customers responded to this change?
Janet: Oh they love the bottles! The bottles are more elegant and they’re actually beautiful. I know there was a client who was a little afraid of the glass because she thought it might break, and I just let it drop on the floor, one of the bottles, and let her see that it was stable, it was sturdy enough and then she’s actually fallen in love with it. She’s fallen in love with the bottles. They’re very easy to use, they’re beautiful, and they’re everything she could want. I like the fact that they’re recyclable.
Ed: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Janet: We’re able to put organic inks and tints on the bottles, which makes them really 100 percent completely eco-friendly and they have actually added a great deal of beauty to the line so I’m loving them. And I’m hoping that at this point, I will be able to actually recycle the bottles by having the bottles refilled and not having to throw them away.
