Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

Since 1979, LiDestri Food & Beverage has used glass jars to package its products, which includes 70 product lines that fill more than 400 million glass containers annually. As part of its operations, the company will recycle nearly 500,000 pounds of glass each year, freeing sufficient energy to run 450 60-watt bulbs day and night without pause year after year.

“Glass is what the generations before us had used; there’s comfort in that. Consumers have a confidence in glass and with our production volumes we’re able to offer premium and accessible products - the best of both worlds,” comments Stefani LiDestri, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. “Glass is also 100 percent recyclable and pure, providing added benefits to our customers.”

Glass is the primary material used for LiDestri’s packaged goods, generally accounting for more than 75% of all packaging materials, including cardboard, plastic wrap, and pallets. As a responsible partner within the industry, LiDestri sources it’s glass from within a couple hundred miles of its facilities, minimizing its carbon impact. LiDestri is a sustainable steward of its glass…from sourcing to internal use to customer use… from cradle to grave!

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

Beyond glass, LiDestri Food & Beverage is dedicated to recycling its process byproducts by finding beneficial reuse for them. Over 30,000,000 pounds of these byproducts will be recycled in the next year, more than twice the waste going to landfill. The excellence of its recycling program was recognized in 2008 when the company won the Environmental Leadership Award in the Reuse/Recycling Category as presented by the Rochester Business Journal and Bank of America.

Currently, LiDestri recycles almost all its excess cardboard material, glass packaging, metal straps and several other materials. The company has set aggressive sustainability goals such as decreasing its paper use by 25 percent by 2013 and decreasing water usage by at least 50 percent across all facilities by 2014.

The company is rapidly working to eliminate additional waste byproducts, having eliminated a different type of waste going to landfill each month in 2010. The company is confident that it will achieve its current goal of 95% recycling by 2013. Ultimately, it will send less than 1% of its waste to landfill.

Future Plans

LiDestri Food & Beverage has established a long tradition and achieved great success in the use of glass. The company sees its past triumphs being repeated in the future as it continues to experiment with new geometries, lightweight glass, and jar ornamentation. The goal is to design ever increasingly improved glass jars that better use glass as a material, that are more efficient in production, and that is fitter for customer use.

The company has established sustainable packaging design principles that help guide new developments, and has chartered a multifunctional council of LiDestri people to assure compliance. These design principles are:

  • Move materials that are not recycled or renewable to being recycled and renewable.
  • Decrease the amount of packaging materials.
  • Increase amount of product volume in packaging, thereby reducing the amount per product.
  • Reduce overall cost of product
  • Reduce wasted packaging materials from breakage or other loss during manufacturing processes, transportation, retail, and in customer hands.

LiDestri has made significant commitments to being a responsible sustainable partner within the industry. The company has demonstrated its dedication in its sustainable use of glass in the past and intends to display even greater sustainable accomplishments in the future.
