About EDEN Foods

EDEN Foods—a principled 43-year natural food manufacturer of 250 authentically organic, traditional, pure and purifying foods.

EDEN is America’s oldest natural food company. Shortcuts are never allowed. EDEN foods are local first from a dedicated and sustainable supply network.

No—irradiation, preservatives, toxic additives, food colorings, refined sugar, or genetically engineered experiments - GMOs.

Full transparency—Full disclosure of ingredients and handling.

EDENSOY—North America’s first soymilk Verified to Non-GMO Project standards.

Glass container recycling/sustainability achievements

Eden Foods was selected as the best food company in the world and the third best company overall by The Better World Shopping Guide. They acknowledged Eden’s outstanding record in social and environmental responsibility. The company earned A+ and A ratings in ten food categories.

“One of our founding principles is sustainability. It guides us today,” said Sue Becker, Marketing Director. “Eden values its precious relations with USA family farms. We are committed to sustainability as our work reflects. It’s an honor to be recognized for our care of the planet and people’s food.”

In January of 2011, Eden Foods introduced protective amber glass jars of organic crushed tomatoes and sauces in their line of shelf stable organic tomatoes. They are the only tomatoes in the U.S. packed in amber glass, protecting flavor and nutrients from light damage. The driving force at Eden Foods for these amber glass jars of tomatoes was the avoidance of bisphenol-A (BPA).

Other Recycling/Sustainability achievements

In 1993 Eden pioneered and perfected a process to avoid genetically engineered organisms and their derivatives in food. In 2010, they introduced the first soymilk in North America to be verified complaint with the Non-GMO Project’s standards for avoiding GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms).

Eden Foods has received the Responsible Packaging Award based on the Responsible Packaging Guidelines for the Organic Industry, a collaboration headed by Whole Foods Markets Green Mission’s Responsible Packaging Forum. In 2008, they completed a 70,000 ft2 Michigan Warehouse addition that reflects their commitment to sustainable growth and follow LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) principles. This warehouse meets a gold LEED certification level, the second highest possible rating.

Eden organic foods have also been selected by Men’s Health magazine and Women’s Health magazine as “Best Foods for Women” and “Best Foods for Men.”

Future Plans

To continue to provide the highest quality life supporting food and accurate information about them, their uses, and benefits. To continue to have a strong, positive impact on farming practices and food processing techniques used throughout the world.

About Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention

Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention (MCRLP) was established in 1982 through “Recycle, Ohio!” grant funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention. Angela Carbetta, MCRLP environmental educator since 2001, was appointed director by the Marion County Board of Commissioners in 2006. Carbetta oversees community recycling activities, litter clean-up events, sustainability initiatives, youth and adult education programming, and green economic development projects.

Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention promotes green, sustainable living in the Marion area and beyond. Recycling preserves natural resources, saves energy, reduces pollution, conserves landfill space, helps prevent climate change and promotes green industry. Litter prevention is vital for public health and safety, community pride, and economic growth.

Please call 740-223-4120, email wastenot@co.marion.oh.us, or find Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention on Facebook to report a litter crime or to inquire about recycling opportunities, community clean-ups, senior citizen assistance, environmental education programs, and volunteer opportunities.

Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements:

Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention (MCRLP) was awarded a $10,000 Community Development Grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention to promote bar glass recycling. Ohio Galvanizing Corporation provided the required grant match of $5,000. Badertscher Communications helped develop a marketing plan for the project, coining the trade-marked name and logo for “Glass Act.”

Grant funding was used to purchase indoor and outdoor recycling containers for participating restaurants and taverns, advertising, and fuel. Recycled glass sun catchers and glass marble key chains from Weisenbach Recycled Products were also purchased with grant monies to promote recycled glass products. The enthusiastic recycling efforts of Glass Act bars, along with active assistance from Hambone’s Dumpster & Sanitation, Rumpke Waste & Recycling, and Sims Brothers Recycling, made the program a success. Marion County’s Glass Act is recycling an average of 2.5 tons of bottle glass each week!

MCRLP Director Angela Carbetta has been invited to speak to a number of groups about this project, including the ODNR Advisory Board, Ohio EPA, Ohio Association of Litter Prevention & Recycling Professionals, Rotary, Women’s Business Council and the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Group. In November she will address the Association of Ohio Recyclers at their annual convention.

Angela is also active member of the Ohio Environmental Council (OEC), and was just recently nominated for an OEC Environmental Achievement Award. The winners will be announced at the annual OEC gala in October.

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements:

Last year Marion County Recycling & Litter Prevention was the proud winner of Keep Ohio Beautiful’s “America Recycles Day” award for their 1st Annual Eco-Art Fest. Seventeen vendors displayed recycled art work ranging from steel sculptures and paintings on old pizza boxes to six-pack ring snowflakes and recycled glass liquor bottle lamps. Over four hundred people attending the eco-art show at the historic Palace Theatre in downtown Marion. Plans for the 2011 Eco-Art Fest on November 18th are underway.

The MCRLP office was awarded grant funding from the Marion Council Aging to coordinate appliance recycling pick-up services and a volunteer yard raking/composting for local seniors. (Older adults fondly remember drinking milk from re-usable glass bottles, and still swear that it tastes better that way!) Ohio American Water awarded a grant for the MCRLP office’s “Fishing for Litter” initiative—a community campaign to clean local lakes and waterways.

Ongoing recycling and sustainability achievements continue on a daily basis with school environmental presentations, litter clean-up events, and community recycling programs, along with annual large-scale venue recycling at the county fair and Marion Popcorn Festival. ConAgra Foods also presented MCRLP with special funding to assist with these community recycling initiatives.

Future Plans:

Thanks to financial support, technical assistance, and heartfelt encouragement from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention, Ohio Galvanizing, Sims Brothers Recycling, Rumpke Waste & Recycling, Hambone’s Dumpster & Sanitation Services, Badertscher Communications, the Marion County Board of Commissioners, all the amazing Glass Act bars and each one of their wonderful customers, bar bottle glass recycling in Marion is a permanent, sustainable program. We currently have thirty-one bars involved with the project. Our goal is to get every restaurant, bar and tavern in Marion County on board. Hopefully Glass Act can serve as a model for establishments throughout the state and beyond.

Ohio Galvanizing has plans underway to galvanize some new Glass Act dumpsters. Galvanizing has been an effective, maintenance-free, environmentally-friendly corrosion control solution for over 150 year. As more businesses recycle bottle glass, the need for containers and a collection infrastructure will grow. We plan on expanding Glass Act until every bottle finds its way back to a recycling facility!

Special thanks to ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention for their long term vision. In addition to generous grant funding, their market development studies and enhanced technology research provides the focus necessary for glass recycling to continue. Last but not least, deepest gratitude to the Glass Packaging Institute for acknowledging our efforts and advocating for the glass recycling industry. I propose a toast to Glass Act and all our green friends!

About Two Guys in Vermont

We are a Vermont food business cooking delicious all natural soups with fresh ingredients using no artificial anything, and we package our soups in glass jars. We have deliberately selected glass jars because glass does not contain BPA. Glass is also quite the sustainable material as it is virtually universally accepted by municipal curbside programs, and re-using glass jars is practical, functional and economical too. Many of our soups’ ingredients come from local family farms. We continue to grow our base of regional farm partnerships. We make our soups in small kettle batch sizes in South Burlington, Vermont.

Glass container recycling/sustainability achievements

Two Guys in Vermont is a new food business, in operation for about one year as of this writing. Although our scale is not significant we are proud to use glass as our food packaging of choice because of its recyclability and re-usability. One of our aims is to create awareness for increasing glass’ recycling rate by offering information randomly or during occasions such as Recycle Glass Month. We also make it a point to suggest various ways of re-using cleaned glass food jars to our social network and in our advertising. Certainly glass is a material that touches upon the three critical elements of sustainability: 1) Recycle, 2) Re-use and 3) Reduce (re-using jars keeps more stuff out of our landfills).

Other Recycling/Sustainability achievements

We recently celebrated our one year in business anniversary. Over this year we have purchased almost five tons (10,000 lbs.) of local farm foods for our recipes! In addition to the superior quality we receive from using these fresh ingredients we have also reduced our reliance on the intense distribution and logistics system, and disproportionate carbon footprint, that transporting agriculture hundreds, even thousands of miles results in. We aspire to participate in an emerging regional food supply-chain that supports family-scale size farms, preserves rural communities and reduces reliance on heavily transported foods. In addition to using safe and sustainable glass food packaging we are committed to drastically reducing personal exposures to pesticide and herbicide residues. We pay attention to the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) “Dirty Dozen” pesticide guide and choose select organic ingredients when a conventionally grown counterpart has been identified as a “worst offender”. We don’t use GMO foods in our recipes and agree with consumer “GMO Right-to-Know” package labeling.

Future Plans

As Two Guys in Vermont continues to grow we hope to be a participant in emerging regional food systems by partnering with local farmers to source our foods. Today we make delicious soups. We will continue to strive to offer remarkably fresh, flavorful and satisfying soup recipes. Our intention is to also expand our food offerings so that we can deliver a diversified range of recipes made with fresh, local foods offered in glass jars.

An overriding element of the Two Guys in Vermont mission is to practice safe food preparation and offer glass as an alternative to other food packaging choices. We eagerly look forward to identifying new food categories that need to come out of the can and into glass!

About Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza

A chef-driven Italian restaurant group specializing in New Haven style pizza and fresh, all-natural pastas, salads, panini, beverages and desserts. Founded in 2008 in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington DC, the company now also has locations in Friendship Heights (DC) and Clarendon (VA).

Glass container recycling/sustainability achievements

All beer and wine orders are served in glasses. Sparkling water, orange drinks, iced teas and other soda beverages are sourced from companies that use glass containers.

Tables are bussed by staff, rather than customers, to ensure that glass containers are recycled rather than tossed in the trash. This includes wine and beer bottles that are poured by staff as well as by the customer.

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

We source ingredients locally whenever possible.

All to-go orders are packaged in recyclable materials. To-go beverage cups and flatware are bio-degradable.

The restaurant recycles its cardboard packing materials.

We serve all dishes in-house on real china, and flatware is stainless steel. No paper plates, no plastic flatware.

We deploy signage to encourage customers to limit the use of paper products to only what is needed, and offer high-efficiency hand driers in the restrooms, rather than paper towels.

Wherever possible, we use high-efficiency lighting fixtures.

At our newest location, we use an electric Segway to deliver to the immediate neighborhood rather than a regular vehicle. The Segway uses about 8 cents worth of electricity per day, lightens the load of vehicular traffic on local roads, and puts out zero emissions.

We set a casual tone in our restaurants by building out spaces that are simple, comfortable and do not use large amounts of wood, stone or any rare or fine materials that are imported from long distances. We finish the walls with low-VOC paint.

Future Plans

Pete’s plans on opening a limited number of additional locations in the Washington DC area. It will remain family-owned and local, and will not be franchised.

Glass is collected in either 96-gallon carts or 20-yard roll-off containers for higher volume customers. Their primary goal is to make it easier for the foodservice industry to recycle glass bottles.

2011 Friend of Glass - Community Program

“Glass Act” began in late 2010 as an initiative of Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention in Ohio. The goal was to move the large amount of glass bottles going to trash at local foodservice businesses in to the recycling stream. The program now averages over 8 tons/month of mixed glass collected for recycling from about 35 bars and restaurants—and growing. To get the program started, they used a $10,000 Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention grant plus a 50% match from Ohio Galvanizing. Most of the grant funds were used for indoor and outdoor collection containers, covering these costs for participants. Participating bars and restaurants include everything from the Applebee’s chain to local sports bars and smaller restaurants.

About Dr Pepper Snapple Group

Based in Plano, Texas, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. is the leading producer of flavored beverages in North America and the Caribbean. Our success is fueled by more than 50 brands that are synonymous with refreshment, fun and flavor. We have 6 of the top 10 non-cola soft drinks, and 9 of our 12 leading brands are No. 1 in their flavor categories. In addition to our flagship Dr Pepper and Snapple brands, our portfolio includes Sunkist soda, 7UP, A&W, Canada Dry, Crush, Mott’s, Squirt, Hawaiian Punch, Penafiel, Clamato, Schweppes, Venom Energy, Rose’s and Mr & Mrs T mixers.

Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

Dr Pepper Snapple Group has a number of brands available primarily in glass packaging, including Snapple, Yoo-hoo, Stewarts, IBC, Nantucket Nectars and Mystic. The company also continues to sell many of its leading soft drink brands, such as Dr Pepper, 7UP, Sunkist and Crush in glass packaging in certain retail and foodservice channels.

DPS uses containers that are 100% recyclable and promotes their recycling with “please recycle” notations on packages.

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

Beginning in 2010, DPS is tracking the amount of solid waste generated through the course of manufacturing beverages. Cans, glass, PET bottles, shrink wrap, corrugate, cardboard, strapping material, stretch film and other plastics, paper and aluminum byproducts from the production and shipping process will be measured regularly.

All of our plants have recycling measures in place to varying degrees. Our plant operations and environmental health and safety (EHS) managers work closely with contracted industrial recyclers to design and implement processes and systems for collecting, separating, crushing and baling recyclable material.

Our Columbus, Ohio, plant, for example, has implemented education and awareness efforts with its teams, as well as systems and processes that have reduced solid waste to landfill by more than 50% over the past two years, from 360 tons in 2007 to 170 tons in 2009. Our Ottumwa, Iowa, plant recycled 1.5 million pounds of cardboard, glass, wood, plastic, aluminum and other materials in 2009.

Future Plans

The company has set a goal to recycle 80% of waste from its manufacturing operations by 2015 and has joined in the American Beverage Association’s Full Circle Recycling Initiative.

In addition, the company has set the following goals related to environmental sustainability:

Improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 from emissions in manufacturing by 10% per gallon of finished product.

Increase product shipments per gallon of fuel used by 20%.

Replace 60,000 vending machines and coolers with Energy Star-rated equipment that is approximately 30% more energy-efficient.

Reduce manufacturing water use and wastewater discharge by 10% per gallon of finished product.

Conserve more than 60 million pounds of plastic through PET package lightweighting and redesigns and increased use of recycled PET.

About LiDestri Food & Beverage

LiDestri Food & Beverage is a premier private label and contract manufacturer, packing over 40 million cases of consumer goods each year. LiDestri’s core competencies include manufacturing hot filled, cold filled and retorted products in glass and plastic containers for both retail and food service customers. Established 35 years ago, as a cheese manufacturer, the company now specializes in sauces, dips, salsas, oils, vinegars, cooking wines and spirits. LiDestri now operates multiple state-of-the-art facilities represented on both coasts of the United States. Visit http://www.LiDestriFoods.com and http://www.LiDestriSpirits.com for more information on the LiDestri family of businesses.

Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

Since 1979, LiDestri Food & Beverage has used glass jars to package its products, which includes 70 product lines that fill more than 400 million glass containers annually. As part of its operations, the company will recycle nearly 500,000 pounds of glass each year, freeing sufficient energy to run 450 60-watt bulbs day and night without pause year after year.

“Glass is what the generations before us had used; there’s comfort in that. Consumers have a confidence in glass and with our production volumes we’re able to offer premium and accessible products - the best of both worlds,” comments Stefani LiDestri, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. “Glass is also 100 percent recyclable and pure, providing added benefits to our customers.”

Glass is the primary material used for LiDestri’s packaged goods, generally accounting for more than 75% of all packaging materials, including cardboard, plastic wrap, and pallets. As a responsible partner within the industry, LiDestri sources it’s glass from within a couple hundred miles of its facilities, minimizing its carbon impact. LiDestri is a sustainable steward of its glass…from sourcing to internal use to customer use… from cradle to grave!

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

Beyond glass, LiDestri Food & Beverage is dedicated to recycling its process byproducts by finding beneficial reuse for them. Over 30,000,000 pounds of these byproducts will be recycled in the next year, more than twice the waste going to landfill. The excellence of its recycling program was recognized in 2008 when the company won the Environmental Leadership Award in the Reuse/Recycling Category as presented by the Rochester Business Journal and Bank of America.

Currently, LiDestri recycles almost all its excess cardboard material, glass packaging, metal straps and several other materials. The company has set aggressive sustainability goals such as decreasing its paper use by 25 percent by 2013 and decreasing water usage by at least 50 percent across all facilities by 2014.

The company is rapidly working to eliminate additional waste byproducts, having eliminated a different type of waste going to landfill each month in 2010. The company is confident that it will achieve its current goal of 95% recycling by 2013. Ultimately, it will send less than 1% of its waste to landfill.

Future Plans

LiDestri Food & Beverage has established a long tradition and achieved great success in the use of glass. The company sees its past triumphs being repeated in the future as it continues to experiment with new geometries, lightweight glass, and jar ornamentation. The goal is to design ever increasingly improved glass jars that better use glass as a material, that are more efficient in production, and that is fitter for customer use.

The company has established sustainable packaging design principles that help guide new developments, and has chartered a multifunctional council of LiDestri people to assure compliance. These design principles are:

Move materials that are not recycled or renewable to being recycled and renewable.

Decrease the amount of packaging materials.

Increase amount of product volume in packaging, thereby reducing the amount per product.

Reduce overall cost of product

Reduce wasted packaging materials from breakage or other loss during manufacturing processes, transportation, retail, and in customer hands.

LiDestri has made significant commitments to being a responsible sustainable partner within the industry. The company has demonstrated its dedication in its sustainable use of glass in the past and intends to display even greater sustainable accomplishments in the future.

About We CAN Recycle Inc.

We CAN Recycle Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded as a way to make a difference on several serious issues facing Houston, Texas, America, and our planet.

Our mission is:

To reduce pollution and greenhouse gasses.

To raise awareness about the importance of recycling.

To support our local economy through waste diversion.

To promote recycling as a way to reduce the strain on our landfills.

Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

We CAN Recycle has collected and recycled over 880 tons of glass since being founded in late 2008. In 2009, the organization recycled over 350 tons of glass, keeping 88 tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere. We CAN Recycle has already collected over 530 tons of glass for bottle-to-bottle recycling from January - September 2010.

Mark Austin, founder of the nonprofit We CAN Recycle Inc., set his sights on glass bottle recycling after prices for other recyclables dropped during the recession that began in 2008. Austin is finding a brisk business for glass recycling with local bars, restaurants, and hotels. We CAN Recycle Inc. picks up glass bottles from local businesses three days a week and takes them to Strategic Materials Inc. From there, they are sold to Longhorn Glass Corp. and manufactured into new bottles for Anheuser-Busch.

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

We CAN Recycle Inc. also recycles paper, cardboard, and aluminum, and has recycled over 905 tons of materials since the company’s founding.

Future Plans

Moving forward, We CAN Recycle Inc. has a goal of collecting 6 to 10 tons of glass daily. The company would like to have a fleet of automated trucks dedicated to collecting and recycling glass in the Houston, Texas, area and eventually expand their services to cover all of Texas and the south-central region of the U.S.

About MGM Resorts International

MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) is one of the world’s leading global hospitality companies, operating a peerless portfolio of destination resort brands, including Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay and The Mirage. The Company has significant holdings in gaming, hospitality and entertainment, owns and operates 15 properties located in Nevada, Mississippi and Michigan, and has 50% investments in four other properties in Nevada, Illinois and Macau. One of those investments is CityCenter, an unprecedented urban resort destination on the Las Vegas Strip featuring its centerpiece ARIA Resort & Casino. Through its hospitality management subsidiary, the Company holds a growing number of development and management agreements for casino and non-casino resort projects around the world. MGM Resorts International supports responsible gaming and has implemented the American Gaming Association’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Gaming at its gaming properties. The Company has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions for its industry-leading Diversity Initiative, its community philanthropy programs and the Company’s commitment to sustainable development and operations. For more information about MGM Resorts International, visit the Company’s Web site at www.mgmresorts.com.

Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

In the heart of Las Vegas, MGM Resorts International and its world class resorts, restaurants and entertainment venues are using and recycling tons of glass containers 24 hours a day. In 2009, nearly 2.3 million pounds (1,150 tons) of glass bottles and containers were recycled at the Company’s 10 Las Vegas properties. Three million pounds of glass was recycled in the first six months of 2010, putting MGM Resorts on pace to recycle 6 million pounds of glass (3,000 tons) by then end of the year, nearly tripling the 2009 tonnage. By partnering with the local franchise waste hauler, MGM Resorts has been very successful at capturing almost all the glass used by its hotel operations and guests. Glass is sorted and separated at the resorts into large containers. Recycling glass on a large scale first started at the Mandalay Bay Resort in 2008 and quickly spread to the company’s nine other Las Vegas Strip resorts. The recycled glass goes to where the demand is, locally and regionally. MGM Resorts even sends a portion of its glass to a Las Vegas company that creates decorative stone, trim, and finishes for building exteriors. Next time you finish a bottle of beer or wine at an MGM Resorts property in Las Vegas, the odds are great that your glass bottle will be recycled.

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

MGM Resorts International is not only recognized for its glass recycling initiatives, but it is also globally recognized for its leadership in sustainable design, development and operations. MGM Resorts’ newest property, CityCenter, is a global showcase of urban design and human sustainability. As a part of this development, ARIA and Vdara were each awarded the prestigious LEED Gold Certification for sustainable design and construction from the U.S. Green Building Council. Similarly, The Green Key Eco-Rating Program, the largest international program evaluating sustainable hotel operations, has awarded twelve MGM Resorts properties a distinguished Green Key designation for “green” business operations. Following the philosophy of Conserve Today, Protect Tomorrow, MGM Resorts’ approach to sustainability focuses on five goals - natural resources conservation, sustainable construction and renovation, waste management, sustainable procurement, and communication and education. This strategic framework of raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainability forms the platform from which MGM Resorts is fundamentally changing the way its properties do business. Through its innovative efforts in 2009, MGM Resorts’ properties diverted more than 20,000 tons of material from landfills. Content ranged from thousands of wine corks, to hundreds of gallons of hydraulic oil used by the high-tech, revolving stage in the MGM Grand’s KA Theater. The Company also makes significant contributions in more mainstream recycling efforts and represents about 21 percent of the glass recycled in Clark County, Nevada.

CRI plays a vital role in educating policy makers, government officials and the general public regarding the social and environmental impacts of the production and disposal of no-deposit, no-return beverage containers and the need for producers to take responsibility for their wasteful packaging.

Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

For nearly 20 years, CRI has been a champion of policies that increase recovery and recycling of glass beverage containers, along with containers of other material types. CRI publishes information resources such as the 2009 report, Economic and Environmental Impacts of Single Stream Recycling, which had a strong emphasis on how different recycling systems affect the quality and quantity of recycled glass. CRI also produces the Beverage Market Data Analysis, which details recycling rates for glass and other types of beverage containers, and quantifies how container deposit laws could improve glass recycling.

Future Plans

CRI will continue to expand our research and education efforts. We will continue to prepare and publish new research studies to engage the media and the public on the issue of beverage container recycling. We have added a Facebook page, which has attracted hundreds of members from 19 countries, and we will continue to creatively use new social media approaches to reach new audiences. In 2010, CRI’s Executive Director has given 9 presentations at statewide or national conferences in 5 states, from California to Maine, and CRI will continue to reach out to audiences to share information on the economic, energy and environmental benefits of recycling beverage containers.

About Boulevard Brewing Company

Boulevard Brewing Company has grown to be the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest, dedicated to the craft of producing fresh, flavorful beers using traditional ingredients and the best of both old and new brewing techniques. Boulevard’s portfolio of year-round and seasonal beers are available in 12 Midwestern states, with selected offerings distributed in an additional seven states. You can learn more about the brewery at boulevard.com.

Glass Container Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

As one of the largest glass consumers in the Kansas City area, Boulevard Brewing Company recognizes the positive benefits of glass—it preserves the quality and taste of the beer, contributes to the premium image of Boulevard’s products, and is sustainable. Last year alone, Kansas Citians threw away 150 million pounds of perfectly good glass. To the dismay of everyone at the brewery, this figure included some 10 million empty Boulevard bottles; meanwhile, Kansas City businesses were bringing in nearly 100 million pounds of recycled glass from hundreds of miles away because there was no nearby facility to process glass. With the support of local companies and community organizations, the brewery took action and formed Ripple Glass, a processing plant dedicated to recycling glass containers. So far this year, more than 6,400 tons of glass in the Greater Kansas City Area have been processed at Ripple and used primarily by Owens Corning to produce fiberglass insulation, saving enormous amounts of energy and dramatically lowering emissions while producing a product that saves still more energy.

Other Recycling/Sustainability Achievements

Boulevard Brewing Co. has a profound sense of responsibility for protecting the environment and developing sustainable business practices. Our facility features a green roof, which reduces heating and air conditioning loads while also absorbing rainwater, which reduces runoff while sustaining a variety of plant life. The plants, in turn, minimize the overall thermal footprint of the building, absorb CO2 and produce oxygen.

Boulevard’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) provides heating and cooling adjustments throughout our mixed-use building. Boulevard’s large windows, enormous roof monitors, and light wells allow our primary facility building to utilize natural light.

The brewery generates non-toxic wastewater during the brewing, fermentation and packaging of beer, which is treated on-site to control its strength and pH, complying with city requirements.

Boulevard’s closed boxes are made of 70% post-consumer recycled paper and our case trays contain 100% post-consumer material. Both are 100% recyclable. Boulevard Pilsner 6-pack carriers also use 100% recycled paperboard content.

Our employees actively participate in an at-work recycling program where aluminum, paper, cardboard and other materials are collected daily and delivered to local recycling centers for processing. Our sales team all drive hybrid vehicles to reduce emissions and create fewer trips to the pump.

Future Plans

Boulevard employees formed a Brewery Resource Efficiency Workgroup (BREW), which is a team of personnel focused on improving efficiency of resources—material, utility and human—in the brewery and related operations.

One of the biggest tasks currently underway is converting 2501 Southwest Boulevard to a zero-landfill facility. We have already determined companies who can use every type of waste produced here at the brewery including a paper business for paper and cardboard, an organic recycling organization for all food waste and a cement company for non-reusable materials to actually make cement.

In addition, we are actively investigating methods of collection, treatment and reuse of the wastewater to reduce the load on our water utility’s infrastructure.
