Light-weighting Details

O-I recently light-weighted Fetzer’s glass wine bottles by reducing the bottle wall thickness and removing the traditional punt indentation, which has resulted in a reduction of annual glass usage by 16%, equivalent to more than 2,100 tons of glass; a decrease in supply chain greenhouse gas emissions by 14%; a glass weight reduction of 14%; and an average cost savings near 10% for the new glass package design.

Vitro Packaging also lightweighted the Bogle glass wine bottle, using 30% recyclable material in the new package, reducing the weight of the bottle by 16.4%, and reducing transportation costs by 15%.

“With the growing demand for cradle-to-cradle packaging, the glass container industry has a real opportunity to educate our peers and consumers about the sustainable, recyclable, and pure benefits of glass,” said Cattaneo. “Glass is 100% pure and is 100% recyclable in a closed-loop system."

Approximately 2,200 supplier representatives, buyers, and exhibitors attended the Expo. It boasted more than 165 booths featuring the latest packaging solutions to reduce packaging content while continuing to meet consumers’ needs.

In conjunction with the Expo, Wal-Mart also hosted a number of informational sessions on topics, including the Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guidelines, biodegradability and compostability, and transportation and logistics.
