Dr Pepper Snapple Group Recognized by GPI as “Friend of Glass” During 2010 Recycle Glass Week

Alexandria, Virginia, September 16, 2010 - The Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) is proud to recognize Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) as a model company for its achievements in making significant and innovative efforts to choose glass and promote glass container recycling for bottle-to-bottle use. DPS is among the six “Friends of Glass” recognized by GPI during its second-annual Recycle Glass Week, September 12 - 18, 2010. “At Dr Pepper Snapple, we’re committed to providing brands, flavors and packaging that conveniently fit the lifestyles of our consumers,” said James Trollope, director of packaging for DPS. “Glass packaging continues to be an integral part of the brand experience each and every day for numerous products in our portfolio. It not only promotes shelf stability, but is completely recyclable, which complements our company’s efforts to promote recycling awareness and take meaningful steps as a business to divert waste from landfills. We’re honored to be recognized by the GPI for our commitment to the glass format.”

“Consumers need to understand the impact they can have when they recycle glass bottles and jars. Glass is endlessly recyclable and there are big energy savings when recovered glass is used to make new bottles,” says Joseph Cattaneo, president of the Glass Packaging Institute. “We thank Dr Pepper Snapple for its commitment to choosing glass and helping support glass container recycling awareness, and hope this recognition will call attention to the value of glass container recycling and ultimately help us reach the goal of using 50 percent recycled glass in the manufacture of new containers by the end of 2013.”

Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) has a number of brands available primarily in glass packaging, including Snapple, Yoo-hoo, Stewarts, IBC, Nantucket Nectars and Mystic. The company also continues to sell many of its leading soft drink brands, such as Dr Pepper, 7UP, Sunkist and Crush in glass packaging in certain retail and foodservice channels.

DPS uses containers that are 100 percent recyclable and promotes their recycling with “please recycle” notations on packages. The company has set a goal to recycle 80 percent of waste from its manufacturing operations by 2015 and has joined in the American Beverage Association’s Full Circle Recycling Initiative.

"DPSG is a corporation devoted to the use and recycling of glass containers for their products. This is just one aspect of their commitment to being a more environmentally conscience corporation,” says Sam Wilson, V.P. of Product Development at Anchor Glass Container. “In addition, using glass demonstrates the premium nature of their products and the importance they place on appropriate packaging for them.”

This year, GPI recognizes six “Friends of Glass” in four categories: Container Recycling Institute (website); MGM Resorts International (hospitality industry); We CAN Recycle Inc. (organization); and Best Friends of Glass, including Boulevard Brewing Company; Dr Pepper Snapple Group; and LiDestri. Friends of Glass honorees in 2009 included Earth911.com; the Hyatt Regency Atlanta; Rep. Jay Inslee; the City of Fort Collins, Colorado; Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.; Heaven Hill Distilleries; and McIlhenny Company for TABASCO® Brand.

Recycle Glass Week is an awareness event aimed to educate consumers about the environmental benefits of glass bottle recycling and encourage participation in recycling glass to help save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and facilitate the industry’s nationwide goal of using 50 percent recycled content in the manufacture of new glass bottles and jars by the end of 2013.
