GPI Recognizes Six “Friends of Glass” for Recycling Achievements during Recycle Glass Week 2010
Honorees include the Container Recycling Institute, MGM Resorts International, and Boulevard Brewing Company
Alexandria, Virginia, September 16, 2010 - The Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) recognizes six 2010 “Friends of Glass” in four categories, honoring those companies, organizations, and persons making significant and innovative efforts to promote or participate in glass container recycling for bottle-to-bottle use. “Friends of Glass” are being recognized during GPI’s second-annual Recycle Glass Week, September 12 - 18, to encourage glass container recycling.
“Consumers need to understand the impact they can have when they recycle glass bottles and jars. Glass is endlessly recyclable and there are big energy savings when recovered glass is used to make new bottles,” says Joseph Cattaneo, president of the Glass Packaging Institute. “We hope the 2010 ‘Friends of Glass’ will create awareness for the value of glass container recycling and ultimately help reach the goal of using 50 percent recycled glass in the manufacture of new containers by the end of 2013.”
The 2010 “Friends of Glass” honorees include: Container Recycling Institute (website); MGM Resorts International (hospitality industry); We CAN Recycle Inc. (organization); and “Best Friends of Glass,” including Boulevard Brewing Company, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, and LiDestri. “MGM Resorts is working hard to recycle almost all of the glass used at our world-class resorts, restaurants and entertainment venues, and we are honored to receive this recognition from GPI,” said Brad Tomm, Sustainability Manager at MGM Resorts International. “Many of our 62,000 employees and partners have championed the recycling effort in Las Vegas and we are proud to show that large operators can be leaders in environmental responsibility.”
During GPI’s second annual Recycle Glass Week, September 12-18, communities across the U.S. are uniting with glass container manufacturers, suppliers, and recyclers, to hold local activities and events to build awareness and boost glass bottle recycling. Recycling glass saves raw materials, lessens the demand for energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
