Despite Recycling Slowdown, Glass Container Industry wants your Glass for Recycling!
Alexandria, Virginia, December 8, 2008 - There have been recent reports of a dramatic slowdown in the sale of recyclable materials, particularly to countries such as China, that use the materials in new products that are then sold back to U.S. consumers. The glass packaging industry wants to assure all Americans that it is moving forward with its plans to ensure all glass containers are made of 50 percent or more recycled material by the year 2013.
Unlike other industries, the glass packaging industry does not rely on foreign markets like China to do its recycling for it. The glass packaging industry processes recycled materials domestically, creating American jobs and helping the environment by reducing the amount of energy and resources needed to create each new container.
Despite reports of the slowdown of recycling, we want to emphasize that the glass industry needs and wants recycled material to achieve our goals for energy and resource conservation for our nation and the planet. We continue to encourage every American to recycle glass.
