GPI Announces 2007 Clear Choice Awards Call for Entries
To Crown Top Glass Packaging Designs in North America
The Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) is kicking off its 17th year of the Clear Choice Awards, which recognizes the contribution of glass packaging to the image, marketability, sustainability and success of food, beverage and cosmetic products.
"By designing and using glass packaging for your brand you are providing customers with what they really want—a 'pure,' 'premium' and 'sustainable' product," says GPI President Joseph Cattaneo. "Choosing glass for a food, beverage, or cosmetic product creates superior shelf impact and brand loyalty."

GAO Report Recommends Ways to Boost U.S. Recycling Rate
A U.S. Government Accountability Office report released January 29, 2007 recommends federal initiatives to step up recycling nationwide and reports on local activities to encourage recycling. "Recycling in the U.S. has been stagnant for the past several years," says John Stephenson, Director, Natural Resource & Environment, GAO. "So any initiatives that can breathe more life into it would provide a significant boost." Recycling: Additional Efforts Could Increase Municipal Recycling was requested by Sens. GPI Announces MSU Student Glass Packaging Design Competition Winners
Michigan State University School of Packaging students Jocelyn King and Ashley Schmiege already have what it takes to work at a Fortune 500 packaging company: they both know how to apply the "real world" factor to the packaging development process. As first place winners in the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI)-sponsored student glass packaging design competition that took place in December, King and Schmiege each received an engraved glass plaque, a $100 Best Buy gift card and enrollment at O-I's Glass University. UK Leads Glass Lightweighting Trend
The UK is taking the lead in initiatives aimed at reducing the weight of glass food and beverage bottles. Lighter glass bottles save raw materials and reduce energy use. WRAP (The Waste and Resources Action Programme) has been working since March 2006 to encourage reductions in glass waste, with several successes already. Training workshops in North Carolina are getting local government solid waste professionals up-to-date on a new state law requiring bar/restaurant owners to recycle all their beverage containers beginning January 1, 2008.
