Tree-Inspired Design Wins Student Glass Packaging Competition

winning bottleThe first place winner of GPI's 2010/2011 Glass Packaging Design Competition at Michigan State University School of Packaging is the student team of Evan Klug, Dean Rigoni, Alex Shuert, and Sarah Waterson for their Nature's Sun glass beverage packaging.

The winning team incorporated a tree design to create a unique glass package for an organic apple or orange juice. The competition among nearly 50 student teams of four is the 5th glass bottle design competition at MSU. According to their entry, "the most important feature of this product is the glass itself. Choosing glass allows us to design a product that has more options." The clear glass bottle, 100% recyclability, and custom shape give the brand shelf advantage. "Overall, we believe our product will excite the consumer as soon as they see it on the shelf. It's fun, innovative, and eco-friendly." Read More.

Social Media Helps Glass Packaging Make Inroads with New Audiences

Recently, many Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) companies have married social media with glass packaging to either reinvigorate a brand or to unveil a new product launch.  One of the best-known campaigns is Perrier's Le Club Perrier, which launched in early 2010 with a series of music videos on YouTube that feature the brand's hallmark glass bottle. The campaign, which was pushed
Heinz Facebook

out primarily through Facebook and Twitter, has generated nearly 11.5 million views.

This Fall, Heinz has turned to social media to launch its new gourmet ketchup offering, Heinz Ketchup with Balsamic Venaigrette. Featured in the original 14-ounce octagon glass bottle that helped make Heinz ketchup famous, the new product offering is exclusively available through Facebook until December, when it will be made available through retailers.

"We're starting on Facebook first for our most avid fans," said Noel Geoffroy, the vice president for United STates retail brands at H.J.Heinz, which is based in Pittsburgh.

Another trend that has occurred in social media is "crowd sourcing." Similar in concept to the "wiki" model, "crowd sourcing" is really a grassroots movement that uses social media to gather information. The process is currently being used for Mexican Coca-Cola or MexiCoke, where consumers are using a Google iFrames map to identify locations across the United States where MexiCoke is available. Using cane sugar instead of corn syrup and the iconic Coca-Cola contour glass bottle, MexiCoke has gained a strong following in the United States and distributors to have made it more widely available at a variety of retailers in more recent years, as a result.

Oklahoma Lawmakers Consider Beverage Container Deposit Program

Following an investigative study, the Oklahoma State House of Representatives announced that creating a state recycling program allowing Oklahomans to redeem beverage bottles when returned for recycling could have a significant impact on litter and jobs in the state.

"It appears passage of a 'bottle bill' in Oklahoma could create an incentive for people to recycle bottles instead of putting them in the trash, aiding existing industry in our state while also reducing litter," said state Rep. Mark McCullough (R), who requested the study. Oklahoma has three glass container manufacturing plants which would benefit from a more robust recycling program. More and "Earth Talk" on container laws
