Industry Initiative Takes Off to Move Recycling Forward

Bottles

Action to Accelerate Recycling, an event that gathered nearly 80 corporate, trade groups, environmental and governmental leaders for two days in Dallas, TX, is pushing forward a plan to boost recycling rates by 20 percentage points in non-deposit state by 2015.

To reach this goal, small working groups were formed to address outreach, residential collection obstacles, public areas and on-premise collection, and capacity development. They will report back in 30 days for development of a master plan to reach the goal.

The event was sponsored by Alcoa with the assistance of other industry leaders including Owens-Illinois. Active participants included glass manufacturer Verallia and the Glass Packaging Institute. Attendees represented the entire supply chain, including more than 70% of the soft drink industry, 90% of the glass container market and all of the aluminum can sheet industry according to Resource Recycling. Iowa Proposes Change to Beverage Container Refund Program

Iowa State Senate President Jack Kibbie and Representative John Kibbie have introduced legislation that would increase handling fees to the state's container refund program redemption centers. Currently, when a consumer returns a covered beverage container to a redemption center, they receive a nickel back for the five cents paid at the time of purchase.

Proposed legislation would permit the redemption center to keep a penny for their operation and give the consumer 4 cents per container. The state's redemption centers have not had an increase in their 1-cent handling fee per container since the program's inception in 1978. Owners of these redemption centers claim that the increase is overdue and will assist them in keeping their operations sustainable.
