GPI's second-annual Recycle Glass Week, held September 12 - 18, united communities across the U.S. with glass container manufacturers, suppliers, and recyclers around local events to build awareness and boost glass bottle recycling. With 55 awareness activities in 20 states, Recycle Glass Week created buzz across the country that recycling glass bottles and jars has powerful environmental and energy saving benefits. CALIFORNIA

Fairfield

COLORADO

Wheat Ridge

Rocky Mountain Bottle Company collected nearly a ton of glass over 10 days in and around the Wheat Ridge, Colorado area, which was enough to meet the company’s goal and trigger a $1000 donation to the United Way! Based on these results, they are also working to make the glass-only recycling bin in Westminster, Colorado, permanent. Contact Tom Sisnroy for more information.

FLORIDA

Jacksonville

Anchor Glass Container's Jacksonville, Florida, employees collected an extraordinary 9.5 tons of glass containers with their second-annual Recycle Glass Week employee shift competition (they collected an impressive 7.4 tons of glass in 2009)!! The recycled glass or "cullet" collected was added to the plant's cullet supply. Jacksonville employees also posted banners and created community awareness in the area and collected glass bottles and jars from many local bars. Employees also held a very successful education campaign at a local elementary school and spoke to about 100 kids about the importance of glass recycling. Tampa

Anchor Glass Container employees in Tampa, Florida, had a very successful education campaign at a local elementary school and spoke about 180 kids ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade about the importance of glass recycling. In addition, they promoted recycling glass bottles and jars in the SunTrust building located in downtown Tampa. Contact Sam Wilson or Rachel Brinton for more information.

Tampa

Anchor Glass Container partnered with the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) to showcase the importance of recycling glass. The "recycling exhibit" kicked off during Recycle Glass Week! MOSI has several exhibits year-round that draw huge crowds. The glass recycling exhibit is in the “Kids in Charge” area along with several other recyclable items. GEORGIA

Atlanta

Employees at O-I’s Atlanta, Georgia, facility held awareness and glass container collection events during Recycle Glass Week. They also participated in the taste of the town event where they had a booth presence promoting glass container recycling on August 28th. In a “win-win” collaboration, Verallia, formally Saint-Gobain Containers, and Green Broad Ripple Village in Indianapolis, Indiana, organized the drop off of 100 glass container recycling bins during Recycle Glass Week for Broad Ripple bars and restaurants as part of the Broad Ripple glass recycling program, while Strategic Materials donated a second large receptacle centrally located outdoor offering regular removal of glass. The recycled glass will be sold to Verallia’s Dunkirk plant where it will be re-melted and formed into new glass containers. The Broad Ripple collaboration should result in the collection of more than 20 tons of glass containers each month for bottle-to-bottle recycling! Contact Julien Fournier for more information.

Children that are Marsh Kids Club Members redeemed their Recycle Glass Week packet, which included an activity book, coloring sheet, caricature cards and sticker. If your child is not a Marsh Kids Club Member, membership is free.

Winchester

Anchor Glass Container's Winchester, Indiana, manufacturing plant held a drive to collect post-consumer glass containers, which was supported by the Mayor and local businesses, during Recycle Glass Week. The Winchester plant collected over 1,000 lbs of glass this year and made a very generous donation to the local food pantry with food items packaged in glass containers! Henryetta

Employees at Anchor Glass Container's Henryetta, Oklahoma, plant placed recycling collection bins for glass bottles and jars at various locations throughout the community and collected an outstanding 5 tons of glass! They also decorated a float for the Labor Day Parade to promote Recycle Glass Week. Contact Rachelle Day for more information.

Muskogee

O-I employees at the Muskogee, Oklahoma, manufacturing facility visited 9 different classrooms during Recycle Glass Week to talk to students about the importance of recycling glass containers. A glass bottle and jar collection competition was held to determine which class could bring in the most glass. The total weight brought in by students to the local Muskogee Recycling Center was 1,818 pounds of glass! The winning classroom brought in 621 pounds of glass. The winning class will receive a pizza party and $500 toward the teacher's classroom. Local radio station KTFX also had a live remote promoting the collection event. We CAN Recycle Inc held its first Houston G-Cycle event on Saturday the 18th. People brought all their glass bottles and jars to We CAN Recycle to be recycled properly! In Alexandria, VA, GPI kicked off Recycle Glass Week at the Nalls First Annual Nice Neighbor Block Party, a weekend event for family fun. Kids and parents stopped by the Recycle Glass Week booth to learn about the benefits of choosing and recycling glass. They walked away with some great giveaways including: tote bags, t-shirts, spices, stickers and wrist bands!

Toano

The Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA) will hold a “Recycling Glass for Value” event, bringing together 60-80 public and private-sector professionals from all over Washington State to discuss serious recycling issues and provide meaningful tours of working facilities and technologies in the field. Representatives from Strategic Materials and eCullet, both glass processors, will present at the event. This September 17th and 18th, the Great Lakes Brew Fest was held in downtown Racine. The event generated some 25,000 beer bottles over the course of two events.
