New Yorkers Show Support for Recycling in Madison Square Park
Thousands of people stopped by Madison Square Park in NYC on Saturday, September 19th to recycle their empty glass containers, cans, and plastic bottles. GPI, Tomra of North America, a leading global provider of advanced recycling solutions, and VOSS Water, provided New York City’s Madison Square Park Conservancy with three recycling machines for use in the organization’s Madison Sq. Music: Studio Series. Several park visitors received cool prizes, including iPod shuffles, t-shirts, VOSS Water, and more, for recycling! All deposit refund monies collected from containers recycled will be donated to the Madison Square Park Conservancy.
Little Bottle Tours NYC
On Sunday, September 20th Little Bottle met up with glass recyclers in NYC, stopping at celebrated landmarks. Little Bottle posed for pictures to celebrate Recycle Glass Week!
Little Bottle’s Glass Recycling Posters Make it on the Today Show!
Little Bottle made posters for the Today Show with the hopes of creating awareness for Recycle Glass Week, and … he got on air!! On Monday, September 21st, ‘friends of glass’ held up Little Bottle’s posters in the outdoor broadcast area of Rockefeller Center at the Today Show to spread the word about the benefits of glass container recycling. They even got to meet Matt, Meredith, and Al, who as expected, are ‘friends of glass’!

Over 50 member events in 22 states across the country helped to encourage glass container recycling. Over 20 tons of glass, and counting, have been collected for bottle-to-bottle recycling and two of the Recycle Glass Week events, in Colorado and Indiana, led to the placement of permanent collection bins for glass!
Across the Country: Saint-Gobain Containers visits over 20 schools and over 1,500 students
Saint-Gobain Containers employees visited over 20 schools across the country and spoke to over 1,500 students. They provided promotional items from their educational program at local festivals, events, and businesses to reach an additional 3,000 children. Saint-Gobain Containers has a goal to reach over 10,000 students during the school year with their glass recycling awareness initiative.
CALIFORNIA
Oakland, CA: O-I visits elementary school and hosts O-I retirees
O-I’s Oakland, California manufacturing facility visited Woodrow Wilson elementary school presenting first and third grade students with information on the benefits of recycling glass containers. The Oakland location also hosted O-I retirees during Recycle Glass Week, providing plant tours and education on the importance of glass recycling.
COLORADO
Golden, CO: Rocky Mountain Bottle Company collects 1,640 pounds of glass for recycling!
Rocky Mountain Bottle Company (RMBC) exceeded the goal of collecting 1000 pounds of glass, collecting an astonishing 1,640 pounds of glass during Recycle Glass Week! Because RMBC met the goal, the company will donate $1,000 to the United Way. Since the Recycle Glass Week event, RMBC has received permission to keep a permanent drop-off bin for glass container recycling at the Golden Recycling Center in Colorado, so recycled glass for bottle-to-bottle use can continue to be collected!!
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Washington, DC: GPI Hosts Rep. Jay Inslee at Congressional Fly-In
Two dozen glass container industry representatives arrived in Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 22nd in support of Recycle Glass Week. They met with over 30 Congressional offices to brief their elected officials about the importance of the glass container manufacturing industry, the energy and environmental benefits of glass bottle recycling and GPI’s goal of using 50% recycled content in the manufacture of new glass containers by 2013. Congressman Jay Inslee (WA-1st) was also presented with a “Friends of Glass” award for his commitment to creating environmental awareness and protection of U.S. manufacturing industries.
FLORIDA
Jacksonville, FL: Anchor Glass collects over 6 Tons of Glass for Recycle Glass Week
Anchor Glass in Jacksonville, FL collected 7.4 tons of glass for the week at their manufacturing plant. Jacksonville also held an “Anchor Night” at a local restaurant, Cliff's Bar & Grill, to collect bottles. During the event, Anchor conducted raffles and raised $650 to donate to the USO.
Tampa, FL: The SunTrust building celebrated Recycle Glass Week for a month, and collected 300 lbs. of glass!
GEORGIA
Atlanta, GA: O-I partners with SMI Recyclers; Donates $2,000 to KAB
Employees at O-I’s Atlanta, Georgia facility partnered with SMI recyclers to provide bins at the plant for employees to collect glass during Recycle Glass Week. At the end of the week O-I presented the city of East Point’s Keep America Beautiful Organization with a $2,000 donation.

INDIANA
Indianapolis, IN: GPI hosts Bar/Restaurant Recycling tour
The Glass Packaging Institute hosted a special tour in Indianapolis, Indiana as part of Recycle Glass Week, showcasing how a group of 10 bars and restaurants are working together to divert as much as 10 tons of glass containers from the waste stream each month. Representatives of the Indiana Recycling Coalition, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and SustainIndy, learned how the program got started by Green Broad Ripple, a local community group. They also saw first hand how it produces a much cleaner feedstock for the glass container manufacturing process than single-stream when they toured Strategic Materials, Inc., a cullet processor that provides the roll-off container that is picked up twice a week.
Lapel, IN: O-I Employees collect 1,007 pounds of glass during Recycle Glass Week!
Winchester, IN: Anchor Glass Collects 1 TON of Recycled Glass
The Anchor Glass plant in Winchester, IN, collected one ton of recycled glass bottles through a drop-off program to raise money for the local food pantry. Anchor gave the pantry a donation equal to double the standard reimbursement rate for recycled glass during Recycle Glass Week.

Charlotte, MI: O-I Employees presented benefits of glass recycling to local 4th graders at Galewood Elementary school
NORTH CAROLINA
Winston-Salem, NC: O-I employees sponsor community glass recycling drop; provide giveaways
NEW JERSEY
Salem, NJ: Anchor Glass collected 400 lbs. of glass and put up recycle posters at 14 different local retail locations!
NEW YORK
Auburn, NY: O-I provides plant tour and glass container recycling presentation to 30 students from Alfred University
Elmira, NY: Anchor Glass set up a display at the local Mall and passed out information, stickers, and created awareness for the benefits of glass recycling
OHIO
Perrysburg, OH: O-I exceeds glass collection goal at headquarters
To support Recycle Glass Week, O-I employees at the North American Headquarters in Perrysburg, Ohio, set a goal to collect one ton of glass. But employees really stepped up and more than doubled their goal, collecting over 5,000 pounds for the week. O-I hopes that employees will maintain this pace in their collection efforts at the O-I campus.
Zanesville, OH: O-I community collection event yields 850 pounds of glass
Zanesville, OH: Anchor Glass employees posted banners, and distributed posters, stickers and pamphlets to encourage glass recycling!
OKLAHOMA
Henryetta, OK: Anchor Glass Collects 6 TONS of glass!
Anchor Glass employees also decorated a float for the Labor Day Parade promoting recycling glass. In addition, they placed six different recycling containers throughout the community to promote glass recycling, and the local newspaper published an article on their efforts.
Muskogee, OK: O-I Holds Event at Local Recycling Centre
O-I employees at the Muskogee, Oklahoma manufacturing facility hosted a glass collection event on Saturday, 26th at the city’s local recycling centre that featured a live radio remote with 101.7 KTFX to encourage community members to recycle their glass containers.
PENNSYLVANIA
Clarion, PA: O-I collects glass containers from employees and community
Crenshaw/Brockway, PA: O-I employees visit 585 students, who collected 5,760 pounds of glass for recycling!!
The O-I Crenshaw and Brockway, Pennsylvania facilities visited Brockway Elementary school to educate approximately 585 students on the importance of recycling glass containers. The students were challenged to collect glass through out Recycle Glass Week and to bring the glass to O-I’s facility on Friday, 25th to weigh and determine the winning grade level. The total amount of glass collected totalled 5,760 pounds. O-I partnered with Veolia Environmental Services and the Jefferson County Waste Authority to make the event a success.
VIRGINIA
Danville, VA: O-I visits Twin Springs Elementary School
O-I’s Danville, Virginia plant visited Twin Springs Elementary school during Recycle Glass Week presenting the benefits of glass recycling to fourth grade students. Students also received t-shirts, stickers and pencils promoting the need to recycle glass containers.
Toano, VA: O-I visits elementary schools and holds community collection event
In Toano, Virginia, O-I employees participated in Recycle Glass Week by visiting local elementary schools and giving a presentation on the benefits of glass recycling to local fourth grade students. O-I employees also provided a glass recycling bin at the New Zion Baptist Church to collect glass during the church’s friends and family day on September, 26th.
